Well Dweller is a hand-drawn 2D metroidvania set in a rotten fairy-tale kingdom, made by Kyle Thompson, the developer of Crypt Custodian and Islets. You play Glimmer, a tiny bird whose matchstick is both the light source and the weapon, so the same flame that opens the map also lands hits in combat. Trinkets you find upgrade and recombine your abilities on the way to the queen who took your family.

The game

What is Well Dweller?

Well Dweller is a hand-drawn 2D metroidvania set in a rotten fairy-tale kingdom, built by solo developer Kyle Thompson, whose earlier games are Crypt Custodian, Islets and SHEEPO. Steam credits Kyle Thompson, Top Hat Studios, Inc. and Doyoyo Games as publishers, and the soundtrack is credited to Eric Thompson.

You play Glimmer, a tiny bird whose family is taken one night by a hunter. The matchstick Glimmer carries is both the light source and the weapon: lighting it reveals the dark parts of an interconnected map and also lands hits in combat. Trinkets found along the way upgrade and recombine your abilities, and bosses block the route to the queen's quarters.

It released on September 22, 2026 on PC, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox, and it arrived on Xbox Game Pass the same day. The Steam build ships 41 achievements, ten interface languages, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing and full controller support, and Valve marks it Steam Deck Verified.

Yes. It released on September 22, 2026 on PC, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox, and it launched on Xbox Game Pass on the same day. Steam, Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox and GOG all list it as available now.
Is the demo a separate download from the full game?
Yes — the demo is its own product, not a mode inside the main game. On Steam the demo is app 4540890 while the full game is app 3699590, and the PlayStation Store sells the demo as a separate product from the game. The Nintendo listing carries its own Download demo button, so Switch owners can try it without buying.
Do I have to buy Well Dweller twice to play it on Switch 2?
No. There is a native Switch 2 build, but it is not sold as its own eShop listing: the developer says it appears as a patch on the standard Nintendo Switch listing, so one purchase covers both and the Switch 2 build arrives as an update. Nintendo's own page keeps a single product row and lists the four Switch 2 enhancements underneath it.
Does demo progress carry over to the full game?
Not announced. As of September 24, 2026, none of the Steam, Nintendo or PlayStation listings, and none of the developer's posts about the demo, say whether demo saves transfer to the full game. Treat demo progress as unconfirmed rather than promised.
Is Well Dweller on Xbox Game Pass?
Yes. It arrived on Xbox Game Pass on launch day, September 22, 2026, and the Xbox store page lists it as included with Game Pass Ultimate. The publisher's launch announcement confirms Game Pass for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC.
